U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to distribute what he calls a “tariff dividend” direct payments of at least $2,000 per person to most Americans, excluding high-income earners.
According to Trump, the proposed payments would be funded by revenue from tariffs collected on imported goods. He claimed that these tariffs have significantly increased U.S. revenues and could also help reduce the national debt.
However, for the plan to move forward, Congress would need to pass new legislation authorizing the payments. Legal uncertainty also surrounds the proposal, as the Supreme Court is currently reviewing the legitimacy of some of Trump’s previously imposed tariffs.
While the idea has generated widespread attention, key details including who qualifies, when payments would be made, and how the program would be implemented have not yet been finalized.
The proposal underscores Trump’s continued focus on economic nationalism and direct financial relief to American households as a central theme of his political agenda.
