Norway has taken a significant leap toward the future of sustainable urban transport with the launch of the world’s first wireless charging road. Located in the city of Trondheim, this 100-meter stretch allows electric vehicles (EVs) to charge dynamically while in motion, marking a global first in inductive charging infrastructure.

Developed by Electreon Wireless, a pioneer in wireless EV charging technology, the road features embedded copper coils beneath the asphalt. These coils generate a magnetic field that transfers energy to receivers installed in compatible electric vehicles, such as buses from manufacturers Yutong and Higer.

The system is designed to perform efficiently even during Norway’s harsh winter conditions—an important test of the technology’s durability and reliability. The project has received a 22.4 million NOK (approximately $2 million USD) investment, signaling strong public and private sector confidence in the potential of dynamic wireless charging.

If successful, the pilot could pave the way for larger-scale adoption of dynamic charging systems across Norway and internationally, offering a promising path toward zero-emission public transportation and reduced dependence on stationary charging infrastructure.
