Spanish international winger Nico Williams has officially extended his contract with Athletic Bilbao, committing his future to the club until 2035. The announcement was made on July 4, solidifying the 22-year-old’s status as one of the club’s most prized assets.
The new deal comes with a significant increase in Williams’ release clause—reportedly more than 50% higher than the previous figure, which was estimated between €55–62 million (£47.5–53 million). While the exact figure remains undisclosed, the hike reflects Athletic Bilbao’s determination to keep hold of their star player amid rising interest from European heavyweights.
Williams, who played a crucial role in Spain’s UEFA Euro 2024 triumph and helped Athletic lift the 2023–24 Copa del Rey, had attracted strong interest from clubs including Barcelona, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich. Earlier this year, Barcelona had agreed personal terms with the winger on a six-year contract, but the transfer collapsed after the Catalan giants were unable to meet the full amount of his release clause in one payment—an obstacle complicated further by La Liga’s strict 1:1 financial regulations.
Despite the lure of bigger clubs and European giants, Williams has chosen to remain loyal to his boyhood side. In a statement following the contract extension, he emphasized his deep connection to Athletic Bilbao, the unique opportunity to play alongside his older brother Iñaki Williams, and his belief in the club’s vision.
“This club is home,” Williams said. “I’ve grown up here, and playing alongside my brother in front of these fans means everything to me. We’re building something special.”
Athletic Bilbao, known for its strict Basque-only player recruitment policy, has qualified for the UEFA Champions League following a strong 2023–24 La Liga campaign and a deep Europa League run—another key factor in Williams’ decision to stay.
Currently valued at approximately €70 million, Williams has made 167 appearances for Athletic Bilbao, scoring 31 goals and providing 30 assists. His new contract not only cements his place as a leader in the team but also sends a strong message to potential suitors: Nico Williams is going nowhere anytime soon.
