Barcelona president Joan Laporta has shut down speculation about Lionel Messi making a playing return to the club, saying it is “not the time to speculate with unrealistic scenarios.”
Speaking to Catalunya Radio, Laporta clarified recent excitement following Messi’s emotional visit to the Spotify Camp Nou.
“Out of respect for Messi, our players, and our staff members, it’s not the time to speculate with unrealistic scenarios,” Laporta said. “We were glad to see Messi back at the Camp Nou, but no, we didn’t know he was coming. We love him. This is his home and he knows it.”
Laporta added that he still hopes Messi receives a fitting farewell in front of Barcelona fans one day.
“I still think he deserves the best farewell in history, with Barcelona fans reunited,” he said.
Reflecting on the Argentine legend’s departure in 2021, Laporta maintained that the club made the only decision possible under the circumstances.
“Despite what happened with his departure, I have no regrets Barça is above anyone else,” he continued. “It’s not what we all wanted, but it was not possible to keep Messi at that moment because of our financial situation.”
Messi, who currently plays for Inter Miami, made a surprise return to Camp Nou this week, his first visit since leaving Barcelona. His appearance reignited speculation about a possible farewell match or symbolic reunion, but Laporta’s comments appear to have put such hopes on hold at least for now.
