Akon’s wife, Tomeka Thiam, has filed for divorce just four days before the couple’s 29th wedding anniversary. The filing, submitted on Thursday, September 11, cites irreconcilable differences and lists their date of separation as “to be determined.” The couple shares one child, 17-year-old daughter Journey.
Tomeka has requested physical custody of their daughter, with Akon, 52, granted visitation rights. She has also asked the court for spousal support while requesting that Akon not be awarded any financial support from her.
The “Smack That” singer has previously expressed his belief in polygamy and, in a 2022 interview, revealed he has nine children. One of his wives, Amirror, stated in 2023 that she is among Akon’s four spouses.
Speaking about his family, Akon emphasized his commitment to raising responsible children and supporting their mother, saying he prioritizes providing for the family over attending every holiday or recital.
The divorce marks the end of nearly three decades of marriage and could involve significant division of assets given the length of their union.
